Someone calls and says they are nearby. Then comes the part that always takes longer than expected: “We might come over with a few people.”

You look in the kitchen. There is nothing ready for six people, and ordering individual meals from several places sounds like a good way to spend the next hour comparing menus.

In Qatar, when people come over, you generally want more than a few sandwiches dropped on the table. You want enough food for everyone to pick at, something for different tastes, drinks, sides and, ideally, something sweet at the end.

That is where large fast food combo and family deals are useful. Instead of ordering six separate meals, you can often get several different foods in one box or sharing offer.

The trick is to look for variety rather than simply buying the largest quantity of one item.

Start With a Deal That Gives People Choices

A big box is not automatically a good deal for guests. If it contains eight portions of exactly the same thing, you may still have people asking what else there is to eat.

Sharing deals are more useful when they bring several things to the table.

Pizza is an easy example. A large pizza order can cover different flavours, while sides and chicken make the meal feel less like everyone is eating the same thing. Some of the larger Pizza Hut Qatar offers are built around exactly this idea.

The My Box XTRA, for instance, is much more than a pizza order. It currently includes four choices of half Sicilian pizzas, three portions of potato wedges, two pieces of garlic bread, two Garlic Bread Supreme, four boneless chicken wings, two BBQ Chicken Spin Rolls and a Hershey's cookie for QAR120.

That gives people something to choose from without you having to build the order item by item. Someone can have pizza and wings, someone else can stick to garlic bread and wedges, and the cookie can stay aside for later.

For an unexpected visit, that kind of flexibility is often more useful than simply adding another pizza.

When Pizza Is Going to Be the Main Food

Sometimes you already know what the group wants. If everyone is happy with pizza, there is no reason to complicate the order with five different restaurants.

A larger multi-pizza deal can do the job.

Pizza Hut's WOW Triple Large, currently listed at QAR117, gives you three large pizzas with your choice of flavours. That makes it easier to order for a group where nobody wants exactly the same pizza.

You could go with one familiar chicken option, one meat or pepperoni pizza and one vegetarian or spicy choice. It is a small thing, but having three different flavours usually works better when the table includes people with different tastes.

This is where pizza mix deals are useful. You are not necessarily trying to find one pizza that everyone likes. You are giving the group a few choices and letting people decide for themselves.

A LIMO Works When You Want Everything on the Table at Once

There are also occasions when you do not want a pile of separate boxes arriving at the door.

Pizza Hut's Super LIMO is designed more like a shared spread. It currently includes three Sicilian pizzas with a choice of flavours, a footlong pasta, potato wedges or garlic bread, three dipping sauces and a cookie, with a listed price of QAR119.

It is aimed at gatherings of around six to eight people, so it makes sense when several guests are sitting down together rather than everyone taking their own meal.

The different pizza flavours help too. You can put the boxes and sides in the middle of the table and let people take what they want instead of trying to work out everyone's exact order beforehand.

If Some People Want Chicken, Order Chicken

There is no rule saying the entire table has to eat pizza.

If you have a few people who would rather have fried chicken, adding a chicken deal can be easier than trying to find one menu that covers every preference.

KFC Qatar, for example, currently has loaded buckets ranging from eight to 20 pieces, with combinations of chicken, family fries, coleslaw, buns and drinks. Its 12-piece loaded bucket is listed at QAR89, while the 16-piece option is QAR109.

That can sit alongside a pizza order quite easily.

You do not necessarily need two huge family deals. If pizza is already covering the main meal, a smaller chicken order can give the table another option without leaving you with a ridiculous amount of food afterwards.

Burger Boxes Are Handy for Smaller Appetites

Some guests will always reach for a burger before a pizza slice.

Hardee's Qatar has a 4 Burger Box that currently includes two burgers from selected Double Hardee options and two from selected Curly burger options, along with two fries and two drinks for QAR48. Larger 6 Burger and 8 Burger boxes are also available.

For a mixed group, that format is more convenient than ordering individual burger meals. You get different burgers in the same order, and the fries and drinks are already covered.

Hardee's also has a Mix & Match Joy option combining burgers, fries, drinks and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. That is worth looking at if the guests are more interested in burgers and something sweet than a traditional pizza-and-sides order.

Jollibee Can Change the Usual Fast-Food Spread

If you have pizza and burgers regularly, bringing something different into the order can make the meal more interesting.

Jollibee is one option in Qatar. Its menu brings together Chickenjoy, burgers, spaghetti, rice-based meals and sides, so the order can look quite different from a standard burger or pizza delivery.

For a group, that mix is useful because not everyone has to build a meal around the same main item. Someone can take fried chicken, someone else can go for spaghetti, while rice and sides give you a few more things to put on the table.

It is also a good option when children are part of the group because there are familiar choices alongside the more distinctive items.

Sometimes Shawarma Makes More Sense

If the guests are coming over for a more traditional gathering, pizza and burgers may not be what everyone has in mind.

Doha has plenty of restaurants where sharing food is already built into the menu. Al Halaby Plus, for example, offers larger sharing options including a hospitality box with pies and manakish, as well as a 40-piece shawarma box.

Its larger grill and sharing trays can also bring meat, rice, hummus, fries and sauces onto the table.

This kind of order can work particularly well when the gathering is less about sitting down to eat one specific meal and more about having food available for everyone to pick from.

Mixed Grill Is Another Option for a Bigger Gathering

For a larger group, a mixed grill can be easier than trying to guess how many individual sandwiches everyone will want.

Some Doha restaurants package several grilled meats with rice, bread, fries and sauces. Al Hilal Turkish Restaurant, for instance, currently lists a Family Combo containing shish tawook, chicken shawarma, chicken kebab, meat kebab, fries, a litre of Pepsi and four sauces.

That is the sort of order where you can put everything in the middle and let people serve themselves.

It also solves a common problem with large gatherings: people rarely want the same thing in the same quantity.

Check What Comes With the Deal Before Adding More

When comparing family meals, look beyond the headline price.

Check whether drinks are included. See how many sides come with the box. Look at the sauces, bread, fries or coleslaw before adding another order of each.

This is especially important when you are ordering for several people. A deal that looks cheaper at first can become less attractive once you add drinks and sides separately.

On the other hand, you may find that a slightly more expensive family box already contains most of what you were going to order anyway.

What to Do When You Have Very Little Time

If guests are already on their way, keep the ordering process simple.

First decide whether pizza, chicken, burgers or Arabic food will be the main part of the table. Then look for a sharing deal that gives you more than one option within that category.

If the group has very different tastes, add one smaller order from another category rather than buying another huge family box. Pizza plus a chicken bucket is one example. Burgers plus doughnuts is another. A shawarma box alongside pizza can work if the gathering includes people who prefer Arabic food.

Children are another reason to leave room for familiar choices. You may have plenty of interesting food on the table, but someone will still ask for the simplest chicken, fries or pizza available.

And this is one situation where order food online can save a surprising amount of time. You can see the contents and prices of the family boxes before paying, remove anything you do not need and compare a few options without making several phone calls.

The Best Order Is Not Necessarily the Biggest One

When unexpected guests arrive, the instinct is often to order too much.

But a table with three different pizzas, chicken, burgers, sides and drinks is not necessarily better than a smaller order where everything actually gets eaten.

Think about how the group is likely to eat. A sharing pizza deal may be enough for one group. Another might need a chicken bucket alongside it. For a family gathering, shawarma or a mixed grill may be more appropriate than another pizza.

The useful thing about fast food delivery in Doha is that you have plenty of formats to choose from. You can order a large box, mix a couple of family deals, or simply choose one sharing meal with enough variety to keep everyone happy.

If you are searching for fast food near you, do not stop at the first restaurant you recognise. Open the menu and check the sharing boxes, family meals and combination offers. The contents often tell you more about whether the order will work for your group than the restaurant's overall rating.

Unexpected guests do not necessarily mean you need to start cooking for a crowd. Sometimes it is simply a matter of finding one good sharing deal, adding one different option and putting everything in the middle of the table.
