Most Of Us Never Notice The Way We’re Already Breathing
Look, I didn‘t do breathwork because I was looking for another wellness trend. I did it because my stress was on auto-pilot and I didn‘t realize my breathing was shifting along with it. And that‘s the thing that took me aback about breathwork certification program. It‘s not about acquiring techniques; it‘s noticing the long-running patterns that have been running your energy, mind, and heart for years.
Reading About Breath Isn’t The Same As Practicing It
This is what most people don‘t realize. Reading about breathing exercises, or watching hours of online videos, isn‘t going to program your physiology to behave a certain way when things aren‘t going smoothly in life. Breath Mastery is different in this regard because Dan Brulé is the pioneer of this material because he‘s been guiding real conscious breathing work since the 70s with world-class sports figures, military professionals, CEOs, trauma survivors, and just plain folks tired of feeling like they‘re running on empty.
The Exhale Is Usually Where The Real Work Begins
No one ever said to me how frequently I was short of exhaling. It took awareness for me to notice it, and then I found myself doing it all the time–in tense interactions, in responses to email, on the road, in traffic. Anxiety-driven shallow breathing silently signals to the body that it is in fact under attack, even when there is no threat. When I slow down and fully exhaleI do not have the magic power to will stress away, but I do give permission to my nervous system to come home to my body in a surprisingly tangible way. You know it before you can comprehend it.
Breath Awareness Comes Before Breath Control
The reason Dan‘s teaching was so difficult for me was that he didn‘t jump into breath control immediately. It was awareness first. Learning to sit with breathing patterns and not attempt to correct them was transformative (and when you begin to notice your own breathing that way, you truly can‘t go back which is the lesson.) Small tweak but huge.
Something shifts.
This Isn’t A Weekend Workshop Wrapped In Big Promises
I have been through enough short courses to know the difference between inspiration and instruction. The Breathmastery Practitioner Certification Program isn‘t a quick, weekend certificate. It‘s a full year of study, recorded courses, coaching calls, webinar, also live trainings . That‘s serious commitment, and it should be, quite frankly, after all it takes to know how to safely facilitate another person‘s breathing.
Experience Matters More Than Marketing
Dan Brulé didn‘t find breathwork, have a personal breakthrough, and then start an online brand. He trained directly with Leonard Orr in 1976, and has been honing those skills after 30+ years of teaching in 50+ countries. Tony Robbins calls him “the master.” Retired Navy SEAL and founder of SEALFIT Mark Divine has this to sayabout Brulé: He is a truly inspiring teacher and you wanna listen. That‘s why “He‘s the master” means a lot these guys have to count on stuff that works when you need it.
How about if your daily energy has less to do with motivation and more to do with a breathing pattern you‘ve never really looked at?
Different Breathwork Methods Aren’t Actually The Same
People often group every breathing technique together, but that’s a misunderstanding. Box breathing, performance breathing, slow diaphragmatic breathing, and rebirthing breathwork Leonard Orr developed each serve different purposes. Others jumpright to connected breathing. That‘s not fair at all. Dan preserves each and uses them for different reasons, not one great mangled system. Connecting to your breath, how and when, embodies the thinking practitioner, not the parroting victim.
The Body Learns Through Practice, Not Theory
After a matter of weeks, I realized that I had observed something strange. Challenging conversations still took place. Weeks of busyness still occurred. However, my body began having a different response to it all. My shoulders released more swiftly. My exhalations were less prolonged. My sleep was more sound because I was no longer dragging shallow breaths into my bed every night. None of that occurred over night, which is good in my book…
Beginners Aren’t Left Behind
Not everyone is prepared to jump straight into a year-long practitioner program. This is where the O2 Fundamentals Course, available through the O2 Collective partnership, makes so much more sense it offers a simple, real-life introduction without giving the false impression that someone has learned everything there is to know about breathwork in a couple of lessons. Breath Mastery also provides a free 21-Day Breathing Training via his newsletter, which many people do initially before choosing to continue.
This Work Still Happens Face To Face
Another thing that really resonated with me was this it really jumped out at me. Breath Mastery isn‘t just a bunch of electronic courses tucked behind a log-in screen. The community is still being formed through in-person retreats and events, like the one coming up in August and September 2026 for India. There‘s also the Wall of Love on the breath mastery website, where ages of students’ stories speak volumes Something about reading through the years instead of collecting a few recent recommendations.
Teaching Breathwork Means Carrying Real Responsibility
Assisting another to work with their breath is not about sounding relaxed or reciting cues from memory. It is about understanding how certain breathing patterns influence physiology, the feelings, attention, and recovery, and knowing when to watch, when to lead, and when to keep silent. A lot of this is sacrificed in the short courses. Dan‘s education doesn‘t claim that it‘s easier than it truly is and that is why I credit it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are breathwork certification programs worth taking if I’ve only practiced basic breathing exercises?
Yes. An entire program enables the participant to acquire knowledge of physiology, breathing habits, safe facilitation, and practice that far surpasses that offered by a few breathing techniques.
How is Dan Brulé’s training different from other breathwork courses?
Dan has almost 50 years of experience, one-to-one training with Leonard Orr, teaching around the world, and a dedicated one-year practitioner program instead of a quick certification.
Is the Breathmastery Practitioner Certification suitable for coaches or therapists?
Definitely. There are actually many coaches, therapists, wellness types and serious practitioners who use the program to enhance both personal practice and professional abilities.
Where should I begin if I’m completely new to conscious breathing?
Useful entry points to this topic are the O2 Fundamentals Course or, if you find this too technical, the free 21-Day Breathing Training. The latter is a good example of a good introduction before choosing to train through the full Practitioner Certification Program.
