Here's what you need to make a beautiful IGNOU Handwritten Assignment.
Before you write anything
Verify the questions first. IGNOU changes assignment questions every session. Open your own assignment booklet from ignou.ac.in (the one matching your course code and session, e.g. July 2026–January 2027) and match each question against the Word file. Solved files floating around are often from an older session. Answering the wrong questions costs you the whole assignment, no matter how neat it looks.
Don't copy word for word. Study centres see dozens of identical submissions from the same PDF. Read the solved answer, understand the structure, then rewrite it in your own sentences. Keep the technical terms, definitions and examples; change the phrasing. This also makes writing faster because you stop transcribing letter by letter.
Plan the length. IGNOU gives word limits by marks, usually around 500 words for a 20-mark question, 300 for 12 marks, 150 for 6 marks. Average handwriting fits roughly 120–150 words on one side of an A4 ruled sheet, so a 20-mark answer is about 3–4 sides. Mark these targets on your printout so you don't write 12 pages for one question and one page for the next.
Materials that make the difference
- A4 ruled sheets, good quality (70–80 GSM). Thin paper shows ink bleeding through and looks cheap.
- One pen for the whole assignment. A 0.5 or 0.7 mm blue or black gel or ball pen. Buy two of the same model so the ink shade never changes mid-way.
- A second colour (dark blue or black, whichever you didn't use) only for headings and underlining. Two colours total. Red and green everywhere looks like a school project.
- A ruler, a pencil, and a good eraser for diagrams and tables.
- No whitener. It looks worse than the mistake. If you slip, strike the word once with a single ruled line and move on.
Setting up the page
Draw a margin of about 1 inch on the left (space for the tag or binding) and roughly half an inch on the right, top and bottom. Keep it identical on every page, which is what makes a stack of sheets look uniform when flipped.
Write the question in full before each answer, then "Ans." on the next line, then the answer. Leave one blank line between the question and the answer, and two between answers. White space is what makes handwriting look elegant. A dense wall of text reads as messy even when the handwriting is good.
Number every page in the top right corner and write on one side only if you want the cleanest look. Both sides is acceptable and saves paper if your sheets are thick enough.
Making the handwriting itself look good
Consistency matters more than beauty. Aim for uniform letter height, a single slant direction, and even spacing between words. Slow down by about 20 per cent from your normal speed. Rest your hand every 20 minutes so the letters don't start drifting.
Write in sittings of one question at a time rather than one marathon session. Handwriting visibly degrades after about an hour and the difference between page 3 and page 30 is obvious to an evaluator.
Presentation touches that earn marks
- Headings and subheadings for each part of an answer, underlined with a ruler, never freehand.
- Bullet points or numbered lists for features, advantages, differences and types. Evaluators scan for these.
- Definitions in a lightly boxed area at the start of an answer.
- Diagrams, flowcharts and tables drawn in pencil first, then inked with a ruler, with a caption like "Fig. 1: Communication Process" below.
- A one-line conclusion at the end of every long answer.
Assembling the file
Put the IGNOU front page on top, filled in completely: name, enrolment number, programme code, course code and title, study centre code and name, regional centre, session or year, address, mobile number, email and date of submission. Incomplete cover pages are the most common reason submissions get held up.
Order the answers exactly as the questions appear in the booklet. Tag or stitch at the top left corner, or use a spiral binding. Loose staples fall out in transit.
If a course has separate TMA sections or a project component, prepare each as its own file with its own cover page.
Before you hand it in
Photograph or make IGNOU Solved Assignment for every page, including the cover. Submit at your study centre before the last date and insist on a stamped receipt or acknowledgement. Keep that receipt until your grade card shows the assignment marks.
