Warrior starts in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 can feel rough if you're trying to keep a weapon current every few zones. That's where the Shield Wall Smith of Kitava setup earns its keep. Instead of dumping all your Path of Exile 2 Currency into chasing a better mace or axe, you lean on shield Armour as your main damage engine. It's a simple shift, but it changes the whole pace of the campaign. You upgrade the shield, you hit harder. You stack defences, and the build still keeps moving.
Why the build feels better than standard melee
The big selling point is consistency. Plenty of melee characters hit a wall when their weapon falls behind, and nobody enjoys smacking a boss for two minutes because a vendor didn't offer a decent upgrade. Shield Wall avoids a lot of that pain. Its damage comes from the Armour on your shield, so a chunky shield becomes both protection and pressure. Smith of Kitava fits neatly around this idea too. The ascendancy helps smooth out resistance gearing, raises your defensive ceiling, and frees up suffixes for Life, Chaos Resistance, or other stats you'd normally struggle to fit.
How the damage loop works
The playstyle isn't passive, even though it's built around a shield. You drop Shield Wall to create fissures under and around enemies, then use warcries to make the screen pop. Infernal Cry is the pack-clearing button most players notice first, since it can detonate stacked fissures and wipe groups in one burst. Fortifying Cry adds another layer, giving you protection while also helping trigger damage. Against bosses, you build the ground first, then blow it all up. Once Armour Break lands, Sunder steps in as the heavy finisher. It's not complicated, but timing does matter.
Gear choices that actually matter
Your shield is the piece you check constantly. Look for high flat Armour, increased Armour, Life, and whatever resistances you still need. Don't get baited into treating your weapon like the centre of the build. A one-hander with attack speed, skill speed, attributes, or levels to melee skills can be useful, but raw weapon DPS isn't the point here. Body armour should be sturdy: Armour, Life, and physical mitigation are all welcome. Rings and amulets are good places to pick up Life, Fire or Physical Damage, attributes, and, most importantly, global leech. Local weapon leech often won't do what people expect with Shield Wall, so read the wording carefully.
Leveling and when to swap over
Before Shield Wall becomes available, just level like a normal Warrior. Rolling Slam is fine for clearing, Boneshatter helps keep the pace up, and Perfect Strike handles early single-target fights well enough. A nice trick is to cancel part of Rolling Slam's recovery by using Boneshatter right after the first impact. Once you reach the point where Shield Wall is unlocked, swap to a one-handed weapon and shield, start taking shield and warcry-related passives, and prioritise Armour upgrades whenever you can. If your drops are awful or you'd rather not wait around, some players choose to buy POE 2 Orbs to speed up shield upgrades, but the build's main strength is that it doesn't need a perfect weapon to feel good.
